Typically, rabbit neutering takes place at the age of four months. Castration involves removing a male rabbit's testes, whereas spaying involves removing a female rabbit's uterus and ovaries. Sperm can remain in the vaginal system for up to six weeks, so it's best to avoid exposing your rabbit to unneutered females during this time. Neutering a rabbit can facilitate bonding and matching because of their strong social engagement. This contributes to your rabbit's overall happiness and improved way of life.

Our Rabbit Neutering Process Is As Follows

On Arrival: Please make sure your rabbit is being transported to us in a secure and robust container, ideally with a familiar blanket. Carrying pals along might help reduce the tension that comes with being separated from one another. It is also beneficial if you bring their food with you. Once the rabbits have been given general anaesthesia, we need them to start eating immediately after. Keeping their favourite meals close at hand will speed up their healing process and allow you to get back to your rabbit as soon as possible.

During the Rabbit Neutering: As previously mentioned, general anaesthesia is required for rabbit neutering; at Gower Vets, we have protocols in place to ensure your pet's safety during the treatment. A dedicated Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) will be constantly monitoring your pet during the treatment and recovery time. While rabbit anaesthetic is still regarded as "high risk," the benefits to health alone much outweigh the risks, and over time, rabbit anaesthesia has become much safer.

The danger of anaesthesia increases with your pet's age, breed, and any underlying medical conditions so it is ideal that we know everything about your pet beforehand. Your pet will receive two distinct methods of pain treatment in addition to a premedication to aid in relaxation. Our team of Vets at Gower are highly trained in this so you can know your rabbit is in safe hands.

Afterwards: Your rabbit will need to spend the day with us following their neutering. Upon admission, we will go over the paperwork and procedure so you are fully aware of what's happening. Please be advised that the registered owner, who must be older than 18, or an approved representative, must sign the consent form. After being hospitalised as a "day patient," your rabbit will be discharged later that same day if our team is pleased with their progress. At the time of your pet's release, the staff will go over all the information you need to know about the pain medication and post-operative care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rabbit Neutering

  • At What Age Should Rabbit Neutering Happen?

Neutering can occur for males as early as 12 weeks of age and for females as late as 16 weeks. If you're still not sure, our team of veterinarians at Gower can help you choose the ideal moment for both you and your rabbit.

  • How Long Does Rabbit Neutering Take?

Male rabbits often return to their normal activities within a few days following surgery. A female's recovery following a spay may take a bit longer. You can rest easy knowing that our Gower team will be by your pet's side throughout the healing process to make sure everything goes according to plan and everyone can return home safely and happily.

  • Can my rabbit have one litter before spaying?

Although it's an often asked question, letting your rabbit have a litter has no proven health benefits; the same is true for dogs and cats.
