Introducing a kitten into your home is an huge decision to make and it is important to consider all of the implications, both in terms of cost and your duty of care to look after the animal for the rest of its life.

Use our handy new kitten checklist to ensure you are informed about everything you need to know for a new kitten to ensure its health and well-being, now and in the future.

Vaccinations

* Vaccinations against cat flu, enteritis and Leukaemia virus.
* Two injections are given 3 weeks apart from 9 weeks of age following a full health check.

Insurance

Spinney Vets recommends Pet Insurance, any of our team will be happy to discuss with you further.

Neutering

* With so many stray and abandoned cats overwhelming re-homing centres and in need of a loving home across the country, neutering before maturity is incredibly important.
* Neutering helps prevent unwanted litters in females, to reduce the risk of roaming and fights between Tom cats and reduce the spread of certain diseases.
* Traditionally performed at 6 months of age, can now be performed safely from 4-5 months of age. Speak to the vet for further information.

Microchipping

* Provides permanent identification for your kitten, allowing you a better chance of being reunited should your pet ever go missing.
* Quick and simple procedure, often performed whilst you cat is asleep at the time of the neutering operation.

Parasites - Flea and de-worming treatment

* At first / second vaccine the best flea and worming regime will be discussed with you.
* Worming monthly until 6 months old is recommended. Spinney Vets are able to offer monthly ‘weigh and worm’ appointments to ensure the correct dose is prescribed.
* Lifestyle factors such as being an indoor cat or an avid hunter will influence flea and worming treatment recommendations after 6 months of age. Please discuss with a vet or nurse so we can tailor ongoing parasite prevention requirements to your pet’s needs.

Diet

* A high quality complete food is the easiest way of ensuring optimum nutrition, which is essential for proper growth and development of your kitten.
* Our preferred diet is Hills Vet Essentials Science Plan. Ask your vet or nurse about the benefits of this food.
* Hills range of food can cater for different lifestyle needs, such as your cat living solely indoors as well as for different tastes such as wet or dry foods. The Hills range also allows the food to be tailored to the changing needs as he/she moves from a kitten to an adult to a senior cat.
